India (IND) and Ireland (IRE) will play each other in a Group A match of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 on Wednesday, June 5. The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai will host the contest.
India, captained by Rohit Sharma, have not won the title since emerging as the champions of the inaugural edition back in 2007. The Men in Blue have played in semi-finals and finals, but could not cross the finishing hurdle. Last time around, they lost to England by 10 wickets in the semis at the Adelaide Oval.
India, however, will be fairly high on confidence after beating Najmul Hossain Shanto’s Bangladesh in their warm-up match. Rishabh Pant, who returned to India colours after 17 months, scored a sparkling half-century to show the kind of form he is in.
Hardik Pandya, who is going through a rough patch in his career, chipped in with a handy knock lower down the order. Shivam Dube showed his big-hitting skills and picked up 2 wickets.
Ireland, on the other hand, would be captained by Paul Stirling, who is among the all-time top run-scorers in the history of T20 World Cups. Recently, they lost to Pakistan in their T20I series at home, but their win in the first game in Dublin should keep them in a positive frame of mind.
India are expected to start their campaign on a winning note. They will undoubtedly be the favourites, but Ireland should not be undermined as they are more than capable of pulling up a surprise.
