Sunrisers Hyderabad will go into the match as favourites. Although they faltered somewhat in the previous season, the Orange Army are expected to make a thunderous start against the Kolkata-based franchise. In their previous meeting at the Eden Gardens, the Sunrisers beat the Knights by 23 runs. Although KKR have won 6 out of 9 matches against SRH in Kolkata, one cannot rule the Sunrisers out.
Rahul Tripathi was the second-highest run-scorer for the Sunrisers last season. Although he was not scoring big runs, he was chipping in with useful scores time and again. In 13 matches, he scored 273 runs at an average of 22.75 with a top score of 74 not out.
Andre Russell is just 7 sixes away from becoming only the 9th batter to hit 200 or more sixes in the history of the IPL. That he has hit 668 sixes in his career shows how lethal he has been with the bat in hand. KKR depend a lot on Russell down the order and at home, expect him to be crucial for Kolkata again.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are set to cross swords with the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Match No.3 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. The Eden Gardens in Kolkata will host the exciting contest.
The Knight Riders are the 2-time champions, having won the tournament back in 2012 and 2014. But since then, the Men in Gold and Purple have had their ups and downs. In 2021, Eoin Morgan led them to the final where they lost to MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
After joining KKR in 2011, Gautam Gambhir changed the complexion of the team. But after he left before the 2018 seasons, the Knights have struggled. Apart from Morgan, KKR have had Dinesh Karthik, Shreyas Iyer, and Nitish Rana as their skippers, but none of them have been able to take their team to glory.
Shreyas will again get a chance this season after missing the previous edition due to injury. Gambhir, in the meantime, has returned to KKR, this time as a mentor.
The Sunrisers, on the other hand, named Pat Cummins as their skipper after buying him for INR 20.50 crore in the auction. He replaced Aiden Markram, who failed to take the Sunrisers through to the playoffs last time around.
However, Cummins is yet to lead a T20 team and it remains to be seen how he performs. SRH also bought Wanindu Hasaranga, who can be a world beater on his day. They also have the likes of Glenn Phillips and Marco Jansen, who both can be destructive on their day.
