Delhi Capitals have a strong bowling attack with Anrich Nortje returning to the fold and the likes of Mukesh Kumar, Khaleel Ahmed and Jhye Richardson. The spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel further makes the middle overs a tough ride for opposition batters. Punjab’s batting looks suspect, with a lot of their top batters not in form, and Delhi could exploit this early in the game. As such, Delhi are favourites to win this contest.
Warner has had a great start to T20Is in 2024, smashing 70 and 81 in two matches against West Indies in February. With his focus solely on T20 cricket at the moment, Warner will be determined to get back to scoring big runs this season in the IPL.
In eight T20Is for Australia since 2023, Mitchell Marsh has hit a total of 21 sixes. The big-hitting all-rounder, recently promoted as Australia’s T20I captain, will have the license to go hammer and tongs in this Delhi Capitals line-up. At a new venue, the ball should come onto the bat quicker, which aids someone like Marsh, who loves pace on the ball.
Punjab Kings take on Delhi Capitals on the second match of the IPL 2024 season at the new Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. After a debatable performance at the IPL 2024 auction, Punjab will hope to build a strong base at their new home ground, which hopefully aligns with the strengths of the team.
In the other camp, the highlight is on the return of their skipper Rishabh Pant after a major car accident in late 2022. The tournament will be Pant’s first return to professional cricket after the life-threatening accident. While Pant’s return is celebrated through the country, it remains to be seen how he fares after a lengthy break and rehabilitation.
Delhi Capitals boast of a strong top-order and a core group of hitters in the line-up, but the fact that they are reliant on Pant, who is on his comeback trail, in the middle-order does not quite make their batting very threatening. Against the Punjab Kings side, Delhi will hope to counter their strong pace attack with an aggressive approach at the new venue.
Punjab, meanwhile, significantly bolstered their pace attack in the IPL 2024 auction, but it might have come at a cost with the batting appearing way less convincing. If Mullanpur suits their quicks, Punjab might have a decent season, but the batting is still riding on a few big names at the top.
The overall head-to-head record between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals is pretty close. While Delhi have 15 wins, Punjab have 16. But in the last few years, Delhi have dominated matches between these teams in the IPL, winning five of the last six matches since 2021.
