Mumbai Indians will go into the match as the favourites even though they are playing away from home. Both teams have won two matches each against each other so far but MI, on paper, seem to be the strongest at the moment. The players like Hardik, Rohit, Ishan, Tilak, Bumrah and Tim David are clearly expected to make things tougher for GT who lack a bit of experience in the middle.
Jasprit Bumrah is arguably the best bowler currently in the world across all the formats. The man is coming off after showcasing his brilliance in the Test series against England. When it comes to T20 cricket, Bumrah is at his best bowling variations and has a pinpoint yorkers that usually churns him out a lot of wickets. He is fit and raring to go as well and it will be tough for batters to go past him.
Rohit Sharma has a point to prove as a T20 batter especially in the IPL. He is no longer leading the side and has the freedom to express himself freely at the top of the order. His last T20 knock saw him scoring a century in the third T20I as well. Rohit has been batting well in the nets and opening the innings, he can turn the heads with his hitting in this match.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) will see two champion teams - Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Titans (GT) - locking horns in the fifth match of the season. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host this much-awaited contest.
All eyes will be on Hardik Pandya as he returns to the stadium which he considered his home for the last two years. As a captain of Gujarat Titans, he won the IPL 2022 and also reached the final last year but in a massive trade, MI secured his services and made him captain ahead of IPL 2024.
Hardik will face his former team in this encounter and the Titans will have Shubman Gill taking over the charge of the side from this game. Gujarat will still be hurting from the loss in the final at the same venue last year as they lost to Chennai Super Kings. They will also be without their best bowler Mohammed Shami who has been injured and ruled out.
But the Titans are known to punch above their weight if the last two seasons are taken into consideration. Under the new captain, they will be keen on repeating their 2022 heroics.
Hardik Pandya’s journey as captain of Mumbai Indians commences with this crucial encounter. The five-time champions fought their way to the playoffs last time ending at fourth place and also made it to the second qualifier before losing to the Titans.
MI too are under the injury cloud with their key player Suryakumar Yadav unlikely to be available for this game. Gerald Coetzee too is recovering from injury and Luke Wood is likely to start in his absence. Moreover, the bowling lacks that zip with only Jasprit Bumrah being the major bowler to tackle with for the opposition.
Having said that, MI is a team that knows how to win championships and with Rohit freed of his responsibilities, he could be the key for them along with Ishan Kishan.
As far as the head to head record is concerned, Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians have faced each other four times in IPL so far. Both teams have won two matches with the Titans beating the five-time champions twice last season. It should be a cracking face-off this time around.
