Kolkata Knight Riders will go into the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad as the favourites. However, one cannot rule SRH out by any stretch of the imagination since they know the conditions in Chennai, having played there twice.
Heinrich Klaasen has been in great striking form and is expected to hit the most sixes in the final. He is among the leading run-scorers for the Sunrisers, having racked up 463 runs from 15 matches at an average of 42.09 and a strike-rate of 176.04 with 4 half-centuries and a top score of 80 not out to his name. He also has hit 38 sixes, the most by any SRH batter in the ongoing tournament.
Sunil Narine has simply been stupendous for the Knight Riders in the tournament. He is currently their top run-getter this season with 482 runs from 14 matches at an average of 37.07 and a strike-rate of 179.85 with a hundred and 3 fifties to show for his efforts.
Even with the ball, Narine has been top notch, having picked up 16 wickets at an economy rate of 6.90. It is not a surprise that he is expected to win the Player of the Match award in the final.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will face each other in the Final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Sunday, May 26. The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai will host the contest.
The Knight Riders, led by Shreyas Iyer, have been in stupendous form in the tournament. Under their new mentor Gautam Gambhir, who already has 2 IPL titles to his name, the Men in Gold and Purple have hardly put a foot wrong. After topping the league phase, they defeated the Sunrisers by 8 wickets in the Qualifier 1 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Mitchell Starc set the tone for KKR after he castled the in-form Travis Head. Thereafter, he dismissed Nitish Reddy and Shahbaz Ahmed in the same over. From there on, KKR did not allow the Sunrisers to get a foothold back into the contest. KKR did not miss Phil Salt as Rahmanullah Gurbaz did not disappoint while opening the batting. Later, Venkatesh Iyer and Shreyas scored fifties to take KKR past the finish line.
The Sunrisers, in the meantime, looked a tad nervous against KKR, but responded brilliantly after beating Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 36 runs at the Chepauk. Heinrich Klaasen, who has been in scintillating form, scored 50 runs off 34 balls and helped his team set the Royals a stiff target of 176 to chase down.
RR huffed and puffed their way to scoring 139 for 7. Dhruv Jurel scored an unbeaten 56 off 35 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes, but his efforts went in vain. Shahbaz Ahmed was the standout bowler for SRH after he finished with figures of 4-0-23-3.
The Sunrisers and the Knight Riders have faced each other 26 times since their first meeting back in 2013. KKR are leading their opponents 17-9 for the time being. At the Chepauk, the Knight Riders lead SRH 1-0. In their previous meeting, KKR beat the Sunrisers by 8 wickets in Ahmedabad.
