India are being deemed as the outright favourites to win the T20 World Cup 2024, which is currently taking place in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA). Given the strength in their squad, it does not come as a surprise that India are being deemed as the top contender to lift the title on June 29.

The Men in Blue won the inaugural edition of the tournament back in 2007 after they beat Pakistan in the final at the Wanderers. But since then, India are yet to get their hands on the trophy. They played in the final of the mega event in 2014, but lost to Sri Lanka at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

In 2016 and 2022, India made their way through to the semi-final, but lost to the West Indies and England. The ongoing season is also the last chance for Rahul Dravid to win an ICC trophy as a coach. The veteran recently confirmed that the T20 World Cup 2024 will be his last as the head coach of the national team.

India are all set to start their campaign against the Paul Stirling-led Ireland on Wednesday, June 5 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. Thereafter, Rohit Sharma and Co. will be up against Babar Azam’s Pakistan on Sunday, June 9 at the same venue.

India’s third match is against hosts United States on Wednesday, June 12 in New York. India’s last Group A match is against Canada on Saturday, June 15 at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, Lauderhill, Florida. If India are to qualify for the Super 8, they should finish in the top 2.

India beat Bangladesh in warm-ups

India will be high on confidence before their group matches after beating Najmul Hossain’s Bangladesh by 60 runs in New York. After opting to bat first, they scored 182 for the loss of 5 wickets. Rishabh Pant was sent up to No.3 and he did not disappoint on his return to India colours after a gap of nearly one and half years.

Pant played some outrageous shots and scored 53 runs off 32 balls with 4 fours and 4 sixes before retiring from his innings. Rohit Sharma could not get going, but he has enough experience to know what is required to perform at the big stage. Hardik Pandya copped a lot of criticism over his form in the last couple of months, but he responded handsomely both with bat and ball.

He scored 40 runs off 23 balls with 2 fours and 4 sixes, helping India go past the 180-run mark. Then he got the wicket of Shanto to finish with decent figures of 3-0-30-1. Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the Indian bowlers as he picked up 2 wickets for 12 runs in 3 overs.

Shivam Dube could not make an impact with the bat, but got the wickets of Rishad Hossain and Jaker Ali Anik. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Hardik, Axar Patel accounted for one scalp piece. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja picked up one wicket apiece.

Virat Kohli did not play in the warm-up match, but he is expected to be one of their key players in the group stage. Kohli is currently the all-time top run-getter in the history of the tournament. Kohli is also 1 of the 2 batters to have scored over 1000 runs in the T20 World Cup.

Skipper Rohit is also nearing a couple of landmarks. He is on the cusp of becoming only the fourth batter after Suzie Bates, Virat Kohli and Babar Azam to score 4000 runs in T20Is. Rohit is also not far away from scoring 1000 runs in T20 World Cups.

Bumrah was lethal while playing for Mumbai Indians in the IPL and he would want to carry his form into the T20 World Cup. Since Yashasvi Jaiswal did not play in the warm-up match against Bangladesh, it is highly unlikely that he will be picked for the match against Ireland.

Ravindra Jadeja is amongst the leading wicket-takers for India in T20 World Cups and also brings in a lot of value with the bat.
