Ontario Sports Betting Guide

Calling all Ontarians! Looking for a complete guide to sports betting in Ontario? We’ve got you covered.

Use this guide to navigate the complex world of sports betting. The information below will help you find safe and legal betting platforms. This way, you can try your hand at winning big, without having to worry about your safety.

Sports Betting Laws in Ontario

Sports betting is legal in Ontario.

Only parlay bets were legal in the past. However, on August 27, 2021, Bill C-218 was passed. This bill removes the ban on single-game betting in Canada.

  • A parlay bet links together two or more wagers. To win a parlay, all bets must win.

While Bill C-218 doesn’t automatically make single-game betting legal across Canada, it does allow each province and territory to decide for themselves.

Luckily for Ontarians, regulators in Ontario are on board for an open market. This means that those in Ontario can now place single bets, including:

  • Totals
  • Moneylines
  • Spreads

The process of passing Bill C-218 began on February 25, 2020. Unfortunately, changes like this don’t happen overnight. It is expected that commercial sportsbook operators will be able to start offering single-game betting by December 2021.

Domestic Sports Betting in Ontario

All sports betting in Ontario must be done through the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG). Bets can be made at retailers across the province or on the government-run PROLINE app.

The PROLINE app is a sports betting mobile app. It is operated by the OLG. You can place the following bets on this app:

  • Pools
  • Props
  • Moneylines
  • Single events
  • Parlays, and more

Online Sports Betting in Ontario

Online sports betting works a bit differently in Ontario. There are plenty more options for betting online.

Ontario residents can choose between two types of online sportsbooks:

  1. PlayOLG.ca & PROLINE
  2. Any sportsbook that is operated internationally

Like in the other provinces and territories across the country, Canadians in Ontario are free to bet online using legal, offshore sportsbooks.

What makes an international sportsbook legal?

For Ontarians to legally place wagers online using a sportsbook that is not government-run, the site must be operated internationally. In other words, the company that runs the sportsbook must not have any operations located within Canada.

Keep in mind, safety and security are important as well. Make sure you are gambling on a reputable and licensed sportsbook. This will ensure your personal and financial information is protected.

The Future of Sports Betting in Ontario

By the end of 2021, single-game betting will be in full motion in Ontario.

Online sportsbooks that operate within Canada (and are not currently legal for Canadian players to use) will also be allowed to introduce these betting options. This includes sportsbooks like:

  • theScore
  • DraftKings

With new changes like this, it’s possible that the Canadian government will further improve sports betting laws. In the future, we could even see privately owned, domestic sportsbooks become legal - especially in Ontario.

Many companies, such as DraftKings, look forward to these changes. As laws continue to evolve, more diversity and choice will be introduced to the market. The goal - a free and open market for all.

Domestic vs Offshore Sportsbooks in Ontario

Domestic

There are two domestic sportsbooks in Ontario. These are run by the OLG. One is PlayOLG.ca and the other is PROLINE.

Previously, domestic sportsbooks in Ontario required multiple wagers for any bet. Now that single-game betting is legal, sports betting in Ontario is guaranteed to change.

The OLG states that there are 28 casinos in Ontario, some of which also offer sports betting.

Here are some great Ontario casinos that offer sports betting:

  • Caesars Windsor
  • Casino Niagara
  • Casino Woodbine
  • Gateway Casinos Sault Ste. Marie
  • Pickering Casino Resort

If you love sports betting and are looking for online options, check out offshore sportsbooks.

Offshore Sportsbooks in Ontario

When it comes to offshore sportsbooks, there are a lot more options. Ontarians can choose from a huge selection of sportsbooks that are operated internationally. For example:

These sportsbooks are completely legal for players in Ontario. It is important, however, to ensure any offshore sportsbook is licensed and regulated to protect yourself and your sensitive information.
