Sports Betting Laws in Québec

Québec has many great options for legal sports betting. To gamble in this province, you must be 18 years old or older. Sports betting in Québec became even more exciting and accessible in 2021. On August 27, 2021, the Canadian federal government passed Bill C-218. This bill allows for sports betting on a single event.

Before Bill C-218, sports bettors had to bet on two or more events. This is sometimes referred to as a parlay bet. In a parlay bet, each wager must be won to win the entire bet. Therefore, betting on a single game can increase your odds and result in more successful wagers. Québec lawmakers welcomed bill C-218. However, the community of Kahnawake has been fighting the bill since it was introduced.

The Kahnawake Gaming Commission is a Montréal-based gaming regulator. This organization and indigenous community has been operating online gaming since 1996. They see this bill as disastrous to their livelihood and argue that it could impact the fairness of gambling in Canada.

Regardless of the Kahnawake Gaming Commission’s outlook, Québec has agreed to accept Bill C-218. As a result, sports betting in Québec currently allows for single-game betting.

In Quebec, Who Can Participate in Sports Betting?

Only residents of Quebec have access to Mise-o-jeu+, the digital platform offered by Loto Quebec, which necessitates a GameSpace account. Participants must be at least 18 years old. Here are the details:

  • The minimum legal age for sports betting in Quebec is 18, though it's important to note that the top sports betting applications in Canada require users to be at least 19 years old.

  • Mobile Betting in Quebec: Residents have the option to place their bets through the Mise-o-jeu+ app or on various leading sports betting websites from other countries. Mise-o-jeu is a service provided, managed, and regulated by Loto-Québec.

  • Placing Bets in Person: Thanks to Mise-o-jeu, residents can now conveniently place their bets in person at local convenience stores throughout Quebec, eliminating the need to travel far.

  • Online Registration: Individuals looking to bet can easily set up an account online with Mise-o-jeu or another sports betting platform, bypassing the need to visit a physical lottery outlet.

  • Physical Sports Betting Locations: While Quebec does not host dedicated sports betting venues, the Montreal Casino offers a betting section with relatively high betting limits, marking it as a potential hot spot for such activities in the future.

  • Taxation on Winnings: In Canada, gambling winnings are not subject to taxes, provided they do not constitute the main source of income for the individual.

Online Sports Betting in Québec

Québec sports bettors can legally place sports bets online using a province-run platform. You can also choose from a huge selection of offshore online sportsbooks. As long as the sportsbook is not owned or operated from within Canada, it’s considered legal in Québec. This is because Canadian governments (both federal and provincial) don’t regulate overseas operations.

When betting on sports online, you’ll be able to choose from the following betting options:

  • Single events
  • Moneylines
  • Pools
  • Props
  • Parlays, and more

Domestic Sportsbooks in Québec

There are several options for domestic sports betting in Québec. Quebecers can choose from two domestic online sportsbooks. Loto-Québec operates both:

Thanks to Bill C-218, these domestic sportsbooks now offer single-event betting. This makes sports betting even more exciting and can increase your odds of success!  Prefer to place your wagers in person? Although Québec is the second largest province in Canada, it has just five land-based casinos. Sports bettors can check out the following Québec casinos that offer sports betting:

  • Casino de Montréal
  • Salon de jeux de Québec
  • Casino du Lac-Leamy
  • Casino de Mont-Tremblant
  • Casino de Charlevoix

All of these casinos are run by the Québec government and are licensed, legal and safe.
